IPTV Roku guide: what works and what doesn't

Roku is the most limited device for IPTV: it can't install apps from outside the Roku Channel Store, and IPTV players there come and go. You can still watch by mirroring from a phone, or by adding a Firestick to the same TV.

Step-by-step setup

Roku is popular in the US for good reason: it’s simple and cheap. But that simplicity comes from a closed system. Unlike a Firestick or an Android TV box, a Roku can’t install apps from outside its own store, and that’s where most IPTV players live. Here are the options that actually work.

Option 1: mirror from an Android phone

Many Roku devices accept screen mirroring from Android phones and Windows PCs.

  1. Allow mirroring on the Roku

On the Roku, open Settings → System → Screen mirroring and set the mode to Prompt or Always allow.

  2. Install a player on the phone

Install IPTV Smarters Pro on the phone and sign in with your login details, as shown in our IPTV Smarters Pro guide.

  3. Start mirroring

On the phone, open Smart View, Cast or Screen mirroring (the name depends on the brand) and pick your Roku. Start a channel in the app and turn the phone sideways.

Option 2: AirPlay from an iPhone or iPad

Recent Roku models support AirPlay. Install Smarters Player Lite on your iPhone or iPad, sign in, start a channel, then tap the AirPlay icon in the player (or use Screen Mirroring in Control Center) and choose your Roku. Check Settings → Apple AirPlay and HomeKit on the Roku to see whether your model supports it.

Option 3: add a Firestick to the same TV

If you watch IPTV every day, mirroring gets old fast: the phone has to stay on, and the picture depends on your Wi-Fi. A Firestick or an Android TV box costs little and gives you a proper remote-controlled app on the big screen. Our Firestick setup guide takes about ten minutes.

Recommended apps

  • IPTV Smarters Pro (on your phone)

Run it on an Android phone or Smarters Player Lite on an iPhone, then mirror or AirPlay the picture to your Roku.

  • Players in the Roku Channel Store

Search the store for an M3U or IPTV player. Availability changes often and features are basic, so check reviews before paying for one.

Common problems

I can't find a way to install an app file
That's by design: Roku doesn't support installing apps from files. Developer mode only exists for programmers testing their own channels and isn't a practical route for IPTV.
Screen mirroring lags or drops
Mirroring relies on your Wi-Fi twice (phone to router, router to Roku). Keep the phone close to the router, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, and close other apps on the phone. Read the guide
AirPlay isn't listed on my Roku
AirPlay only works on some Roku models. Check Settings → Apple AirPlay and HomeKit. If it isn't there, your model doesn't support it.

Quick answers

Is there an IPTV Smarters app for Roku?
No official version exists for Roku. Apps that claim to be it in the Roku store are not from the developer.
What's the cheapest way to get proper IPTV on a Roku TV?
Plug a Firestick or an Android TV box into a free HDMI port. You keep your Roku for everything else and switch inputs to watch IPTV with a full-featured app.
Can I use one subscription on my Roku TV and a Firestick?
Yes, as long as the number of screens watching at the same time doesn't exceed the number of devices on your plan.
